School of Computer Science - News Article Image

This past Friday on October 19, 2012, twenty two competitors descended on the Computer Science Commons lounge to participate in the local leg of the ACM Programming Contest.  For the third year in a row, eight teams of dedicated students from the School of Computer Science competed to be one of the top three winning teams that would move on to represent the University of Windsor at the ICPC-ECNA ACM Regional Programming Competition. The Regional Competition is sponsored by IBM and will be held at the University of Windsor Campus on November 2 and 3.

This year’s local competition saw a large turnout of twenty two competitors divided up into teams of two or three.  They were given three hours to solve five independent problems, which could be solved in any order through programming. Teams are provided with only one computer work station, and are forbidden from the use of any other electronic device, but are able to bring in any books, textbooks, or notes for their own referencing. Additionally, team members may only communicate with their team or with contest officials and no one else for the duration of the contest. At any point in the competition teams are able to check their ranks in the standings.

After three hours of hard work and competition the results were in:

In 1st place solving all five of the problems in just under the allotted three hours was the pair of Chris Drouillard and Alex Velazque! In 2nd place solving three out of the five problems was the team of Adam Heinermann, Dillon Friesen and Nemanja Petrovic. And in 3rd place solving one problem in 52 minutes were Efron Silvan Berlian, Chance Chase, and Minghan Zhang. Honourable mentions go out to Scott Nguyen, Joe Nguyen and Matt Renaud who were the 4th place team who successfully solved 1 problem in 91 minutes.

Since the winning team was a team of two rather than the allotted team of three, Chris and Alex invited Matt Renaud, whose team placed 4th, to fill out their team in order to improve their chances of succeeding in the regional competition. The duo has competed in both the local competition as well as the regional competition for the last two years.

When asked if their sweep of this year’s local competition made them more confident about their chances at the upcoming regional competition the pair was at odds with one another. Chris was adamantly tight lipped, while Alex simply offered a shrug.

“We’ll see,” he said with a small smile.

Congratulations to our winners and a big thank you to all of our competitors!

ACM ICPC - Local 1st Place

Eager, young programmers descended on the University of Windsor Campus this weekend for the annual International Collegiate Programming Competition (ICPC)- East Central North America Regional Programming(ECNA) Regional Competition held on November 2 & 3. The contest is an international event sponsored by IBM that draws students from colleges and universities throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and eastern Ontario.

The University of Windsor is the only Ontario site for the ICPC Regional Competition which is hosted by four volunteer schools spread out through the region. For the third year in a row, three teams of dedicated students from the University of Windsor’s School of Computer Science competed to be the top winning team that will move on to represent the University of Windsor at the ICPC-ECNA World Competition.  Winners selected from the ECNA RPC will advance to the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC) World Finals for the chance to win prizes and scholarships.

Competitors participate in teams of three, and are given only five hours to solve a series of nine problems. The problems may be solved in any order and the solution to each of the problems is a program that must be coded in one of the three official languages of the competition, C/C++, or Java.

Dr. Ziad Kobti, director of the Windsor site and the School of Computer Science attributes the success of this event to the ongoing commitment of dedicated students and coaches who practice diligently throughout the year.

“This is a critical time for us, the demand for skilled computer programmers is increasing and there is a pressing need for highly competitive candidates” Kobti said of the importance of events like the ICPC competition.

“What we are doing provides the students with a unique and exceptional experience that no other university in Ontario is providing. Students can participate as contestants or volunteer organizers. Such practical skills are not taught in a classroom setting”

This year there were 131 teams from 63 institutions registered, a new record for the ECNA region distributed across the four contest sites: The University of Windsor site hosted 24 teams from 12 different institutions. These included teams from all across Ontario, including Waterloo and the University of Toronto, and as far south as Perdue in Indiana.

The three competing teams from Windsor did remarkable in the competition with two of its teams placing 9th and 12th out of 24 in the local competition and 22nd and 42nd out of 133 teams in the entire region.

In total there were 8 student volunteers and 9 contestants from Windsor that took part in the event. The School of Computer Science also employs a handful of exceptional technical and administrative staff who volunteered late hours and a large chunk of their weekend in order to support this event.

The University of Windsor also organizes a similar event for aimed at local high school programming students, the Secondary School Programming Competition or SSPC. This year the SSPC will take place in three stages. The first stage will be held on Friday November 16, the second on the following Friday November, 23, and the final stage on Friday December 7. The SSPC aims to provide a similar experience as the ICPC to local high school students and to develop practical, real-time skills that are hard to be taught in a classroom.

School of Computer Science - News Article Image

Programming Competition enthusiast, Christopher Drouillard is the first University of Windsor Computer Science student to be offered a full time position from Google Inc. in Mountain View, California.

In an interview, Drouillard expressed his enthusiasm for the Computer Science program, in particular for a course titled, "Design and Analysis of Computer Algorithms". He believes that "doing well in courses only means you can regurgitate material. To actually be good at Computer Science, you have to do a lot of work on your own time".

Putting his own words into practice, Drouillard is an active participant in competitive programming contests.  One such competition was the "Topcoder Algorithms" contest sponsored by Google Inc.  After participating in the competition, Drouillard found the opportunity to apply for positions at Google itself, resulting in a request for his resume and transcript. Several phone interviews later, he was flown out to California for four additional technical interviews.  To his delight, Drouillard was offered a full time New Grad Software Engineer position.  A few weeks later, Drouillard was flown to Seattle where he interviewed with Microsoft and was offered a full time SDET position on the XBOX Live team at the Seattle Campus, which he declined.  However, Chris did accept the offer from Google and is now officially a Noogler (new Googler)

Programming competitions are not Chris’s only interest.  As an undergraduate Outstanding Scholar, Drouillard is active in research and has written a published paper alongside Dr. Mukhopadhyay titled, "Guarding Simple Polygons with Semi-Open Edge Guards” and presented at the 22nd Annual Fall Workshop on Computational Geometry at the University of Maryland.

Well done Chris and good luck!

On Friday, April 5, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. in ER 3123. the School of Computer Science celebrated the successes of not only those students who have achieved a cumulative GPA over 10.0 with a major GPA over 10.5, but also those undergraduate students who have made an impact in research, industry and in their undergraduate community.

In addition to honouring our hard working students for their outstanding academic achievements, we were also delighted to have Irek Kusmierczyk address the students as the Keynote Speaker.  Irek received his PhD in Political Science from Vanderbilt University (U.S), his M.Sc. in Government from the London School of Economics (U.K), an MA from the Jagiellonian University (Poland) and a Bachelor of Journalism from Carleton University.  He worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland as an Atlantic Council of Canada Fellow, was invited to take part in the Foreign Correspondents' Program by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, and received a Rotary Academic Ambassadorial Fellowship.  He now works for a Regional Innovation Centre called WEtech Alliance as Project Manager develop programs that direct more young people into the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  His education and good sense has evidently failed him, as he remains a die-hard Leafs fan to this very day.

Awards were also given for the Highest GPA in General or Honours degree programs.  Matthew Robert Renaud – 3rd year Honours student, was recognized for his academic excellence, the Director’s Honour Roll, Outstanding Scholar Award and the NSERC-USRA award.   Vladislav Nestorov recently earned his B.Sc.(General)-B.Ed.

Concurrent and has received the Highest GPA award for the BCS (General) for University Graduates program.

Congratulations to Jonathan Donais on his CGSM Canada Graduate Scholarship award.  This Master’s level scholarship $17,500 while Jon works on his Master’s degree.

Jon recently graduated with a Bachelor of Computer Science Honours degree, Jon will be working with Dr Richard Frost’s SpeechWeb research group to investigate the development of a SpeechWeb voice browser that works on multiple platforms including Android, Windows and IOS devices.  Jon has already built a grammar-based prototype SpeechWeb browser using Carnegie Mellon’s PocketSphinx speech recognition library.  Jon’s Master’s thesis work will include investigating the integration of statistical-based and grammar-based speech recognition engines to create a publically-available large vocabulary speech recognition framework which executes on local devices, offering an alternative to server based recognition systems such as Google’s.

There were five problems to solve with three hours to do so.  We were thrilled with the high level of accomplishment with the top team solving all five problems, and the second place team completing four of them.  The top three teams will now move on to compete against 120 other universities at the ACM-ICPC ECNA Regional Programming Competition.  The School of Computer Science will welcome teams from accross the province and the US Midwest as one of four hosting institutions for this region on November 8 & 9.

Congratulations to the top teams:

  1. Alex Velazquez, Adam Heinermann and Matt Renaud
  2. Will Roeder, Matt Clifford and Justin Toth
  3. Adrien Gagnon, Josh Hompoth and Andrew Hlynka

Special thanks to volunteer Jeffrey Drake and our technical and administrative staff for their outstanding assistance.
